Hot Honey Pork Chop Sandwich

hot honey pork chop sandwich with tomato, cheese, lettuce, red onion and sauce

Let me just tell you that there is a gas station in our hometown, Schulte's, that sells the best pork chop sandwich I have ever had. They have a similar taste to Pork Chop Johns in Butte, Montana. I CRAVE that sandwich and it’s usually my first or second meal when we go to visit our parents. I decided to try to create a buffed up version of this oh-so-tasty sandwich.

My husband said this recipe falls somewhere between our go-to gas station pork chop sandwich and a Chick-Fil-A sandwich. I will take that as the highest form of a compliment. The next time I make these, we are going to attempt to freeze some that can be reheated in the oven or air fryer at a later time. I’ll keep you posted on how that turns out, it may just be the next best thing!

I love a loaded sandwich so I pile tomatoes, lettuce, onion, cheese and sometimes even pickles onto my pork chop sandwiches but you feel free to add or omit any toppings because this sandwich is perfect all by itself.

List of Ingredients for Sandwich Sauce

  • mayo

  • sweet relish

  • cajun seasoning

  • hot sauce

  • horseradish

  • dijon mustard

List of Ingredients for Hot Honey Sauce

  • hot sauce

  • unsalted butter

  • honey

  • cajun seasoning

  • worcestershire

  • apple cider vinegar

  • minced garlic or garlic paste

List of Ingredients for Frying Chops

  • pork chops

  • eggs

  • bread crumbs

  • flour

  • cayenne

  • cajun seasoning

  • garlic powder

  • pepper

  • salt

  • oil of choice for frying

  • burger buns

Step 1:

Make the sandwich sauce first. We use tapitios for our hot sauce. The horseradish can be substituted with creamed horseradish, it will just be slighly less spicy.

Add all sandwich sauce ingredients together in a small bowl and mix well. Place in fridge until ready to use.

Step 2:

Place the pork chops in between two sheets of plastic wrap, parchment paper or place into sealed zip lock bag. Using a meat hammer or rolling pin, pound each chop down to approximately 1/4" - 1/2" thick. If a pork chop is longer than it is wide after it has been flattened, you may need to trim or cut in half to create two chops so that it fits nicely on a bun.

Step 3:

Prep the breading station for the pork chops. Set out three wide, shallow dishes or bowls. On the first plate, add flour, cayenne pepper, cajun seasoning, garlic powder, salt and pepper and mix thoroughly with fork.

In the second shallow bowl, whisk 3 eggs with wire whisk or fork until well blended.

On the third plate, add the plain breadcrumbs. I use my homemade sourdough breadcrumbs here.

Work one pork chop at a time. first, coat each pork chop in the flour mixture. then, dredge in egg dish. Last, coat in breadcrumbs.

Place breaded pork chops on a wire rack until ready to fry. Repeat until all pork chops are breaded and resting.

Step 4:

Place a skillet on the stovetop over medium-high heat. Add enough oil to fill the bottom of the pan up to 1/2". You do not want the pork chops submerged in oil as this is a shallow fry.

While the oil is preheating, prep the hot honey sauce. Add the hot sauce, unsalted butter, honey, cajun seasoning, Worcestershire sauce, apple cider vinegar and garlic together in a small sauce pan over medium-high heat, stirring frequently.

Once the mixture starts to bubble, remove from heat and set aside until ready to use. This sauce should be fairly runny.

Step 5:

Working in batches, place pork chops into hot oil so that they are not touching. Cook for 3-4 minutes and then carefully flip using tongs. Cook for 3-4 more minutes on the other side. Remove from oil using tongs and place on a separate, clean wire rack with cookie sheet underneath to catch any oil drippings. Repeat this step until all pork chops are fried.

Step 6:

While the pork chops are still hot and on the wire rack over the top of the cookie sheet, ladle a scoop of the hot honey sauce over each chop.

Immediately place a piece of pepper jack cheese over each pork chop while warm so that the cheese melts. Allow to cool on the wire rack.

Step 7:

Assemble the sandwich by smearing the prepped sandwich sauce on both pieces of a hamburger bun. Add the pork chop and any other desired toppings. We also use tomato, lettuce, red onion and pickles to complete our sandwich.

A perfect side dish for this is my homemade sweet potato fries that I will post separately soon! Please give me a follow, leave a comment letting me know what you think and/or check out some of the other recipes posted.
